Reginald Hulland Murfin (1893-1917) Reginald Hulland (not R F as on the roll), was born in Bradley, Derbyshire about March 1893 to John and Naomi Murfin. The 1901 census record the family living in Mackworth and Reginald’s father working as a Gardener/Domestic. He had 4 brothers and sisters, Basil Joseph, Francis Kirby and William Edward John, aged 11, 9 and 5 weeks and Marjory Grace aged 5. By 1911 he was working for Mr Arthur Hanson as a Cowman. Mr Hanson’s address was given as the Mundy Arms although his occupation was a farmer. Reginald died of his wounds on the 2nd September 1917 and is buried in the Tournai Communal Cemetery. He was a private in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) 1st/5th Battalions, service number 200614. The Germans had occupied Tournai from August 1914 to November 1918 so it seems highly probable that Reginald was a prisoner of war at the time of his death. On his memorial stone are the words “In memory of the dearly loved son of Mr and Mrs Murfin of Mackworth, Derby.”
